Please donate to help with our new Wildlife Reserve Extension

We are very excited to announce that the blocks of land separating our Nardoo and Moorunde Wildlife Reserves have been purchased by Wombats SA!

These blocks were owned by our long-time neighbour and supporter Valmai Hankel, who named them Wombat Camp. Her generous offer of a discount on the full valuation price led the Committee to accept her offer – we simply couldn’t let this opportunity pass us by!

About Wombat Camp

The land consists of three parcels totalling approximately 522 ha (5.219 sq.km) stretching from Moorundie Road up north along Hankel Road and the Moorunde Wildlife Reserve western boundary (please see the images below showing the three blocks and how they fit within the footprint of our existing reserves).

The property is in a similar condition to the original condition of what we call “Twelve Mile Plain” (now part of Moorunde Wildlife Reserve) and we are delighted to find there are some wombats there. And there are some buildings! Two of the buildings are houses that may be used as accommodation for those who do not have camping facilities of their own and can only visit/work/explore for one day at present. A great asset!

The purchase also gives more control over the entrances to Moorunde Wildlife Reserve and  ensures this adjoining property is used for environmental purposes, which is important!

Member and Supporter Donations needed

The Sale cost is $123,000.

The purchase made use of donations we had received and were saving for just such an eventuality. However, this purchase has depleted those savings so now need to do a major fundraising drive as there are many associated costs related to the purchase, plus the on-going costs of maintenance and development work,  rates, water and insurance, etc.

Any donations you are able to make towards our work will be gratefully received and put to good use.

Please contact the association if you have any questions about Wombat Camp or the donation process.

A first fundraising event was a film night on November 3rd 2020 at the Capri Theatre where the movie “Never too Late”. We raised over $3000 on the night and plan a range of other fundraising activities during 2021.
