Thanks Australian Wildlife Society for financing this project.
Wombats SA began in 1960 as the Natural History Society of South Australia and now our name more accurately reflects what our core work is – preserving and protecting wombats!
We have been promoting and lobbying for the protection of the native flora and fauna of South Australia ever since we began. Our focus is on practical conservation and promoting the protection and preservation of our unique natural history by example. We believe species conservation comes from habitat protection. To protect the species fully, the best way to do that is to preserve the ecosystem in which they live. Read more about us…
We manage and maintain the Moorunde Wildlife Reserve, the first established and currently largest sanctuary for Southern Hairy-nosed Wombats in the Murraylands of South Australia as well as five other reserves which between them cover over 7,700 Hectares. Help us protect and preserve these special and unique animals who are the faunal emblem of South Australia! We estimate we are protecting around over 3,000 wombats,
Southern Hairy-nosed Wombats in the Murraylands can experience some health problems due to over-grazing of their natural food source – native grasses. Wombats SA, together with other groups, individuals and researchers under the name Wombats Alliance, is working towards a long-term and region-wide solution to the over-grazing situation.
You can help us make a difference – why not Make a Donation?
If you have some time to donate, we’d love to have you join us for a Volunteer Working Bee to experience practical conservation where upkeep of the reserves is the main aim, or as an Affiliate Member.
Wombats SA acknowledges the Traditional Owners and custodians of country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, sea and community. We pay our respects to their cultures and to their elders past and present.
